Fire & Ice - 11 Weeks Out • Just be Reasonable

Updated: Jun 17, 2019

A friend sent me this:

This is like a literal picture of me. I am the worst in the world about stretching. I start running and then run and then stop running. Anything else has always been a waste of time to me.

But, alas, I'm not 30 any more. (For the record, I'm 46). So my body no longer does what I want it do just because I want it to do it.

Sigh.

I am trying to do a little more due stretching due to my tibialis anterior tendonitis foot stuff (and because I definitely don't want to end up in that scary MRI machine again). Also some strength building for that area (basically walking around on my heels 3-5x/day). And some other, regular stretching, like this "World's Greatest Stretch". You know, trying to be reasonable. Not my forte.

Some people are on my case about continuing to run even with this injury. Here are the rules I'm applying to the situation.

I will keep running as long as:

1. The pain is not above a 5 on a 1-10 scale (0 = no pain; 10 = worst pain ever)

2. Pain does not persist to the next day.

3. Pain does not get greater week after week

If these conditions can't be met, I'll need to back off my running and reevaluate the entire race plan. So this week I also kept track of a pain score when I run (foot does not bother me for any other activity, including CrossFit).

So, 11 weeks to go, training was:

Mon - CrossFit (30 deadlift @ 30kg; 100 burpees; 60 knee push ups)

Tue - off

Wed - CrossFit (20 deadlifts @54kg; 240 single-unders; 80-4kg wall ball; 40 weighted box step-overs; 70 ring rows)

Thurs - off

Fri - 7 mile run; 8 lb pack (pain = 2)

Sat - 7.3 mile run; 8 lb pack (pain = 3)

Sun - 7 mile run; 9 lb pack (pain = 2) Totals = 21 miles; 2 CF days
